Drexel in Ireland: Summer in Dublin

St. Patrick's Cathedral Photo

Program Overview

The Drexel in Dublin program is a unique opportunity that allows Drexel students to spend 5 weeks living and studying in Dublin, Ireland. Dublin is an ancient city that is currently one of the most dynamic and fastest growing European capitals. This program is open to all majors and offered during summer term only. The Drexel in Dublin program can also be taken in conjunction with the Drexel in London program. This option allows students to spend 5 weeks in Dublin and 5 weeks in London during the summer term--if this option interests you, please apply for the Dublin+London program. Both programs are run in partnership with the Foundation for International Education "FIE." For more information on the Dublin+London option, please visit that program page.

FIE has teamed up with the Dublin Business School "DBS" in order to utilize their on-site faculty, housing accommodations, classrooms and, campus resources. Student participants will be from Drexel and other American universities. FIE's experienced resident director works together with DBS to support students in fully utilizing the historical, cultural, social and political resources of Ireland in their out-of-class time.

Dublin is an ancient city that is currently one of the most dynamic and fastest growing European capitals. Ireland has wholeheartedly embraced the opportunities afforded by European Union membership. With a young and vibrant population of over one million, it has enjoyed considerable economic growth in the last decade. While Dublin may be a city on the move, the charm, culture and heritage of old Dublin is still apparent everywhere. Check out Dublin Events Blog

Campus: Classes will be held at DBS which is located in the heart of the city just a few minutes' stroll from St. Stephens Green, Grafton Street, Trinity College and the Temple Bar district. Also close by are shops, galleries, museums and the Houses of The Oireacthas (the Irish Parliament and Senate). The city offers an ideal base for exploring other countries in Europe. Dublin is well-served with a large number of European airlines offering low student fares to all the major cities and attractions in Europe. London, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome and Venice are all within a three hour radius by airplane.

Academics

Course Availability
Students on the Drexel in Dublin program will take 2 courses: Irish History, Literature & Politics AND Irish Culture & Society

Dublin course descriptions
Each is worth 4.5 credits and is taught on an accelerated 5 week schedule. In addition to courses taken in Dublin, all students are required to undertake an independent study (minimum 3 credits) over the summer term with a Drexel faculty member. This means choosing a subject and identifying a Drexel professor within that department to oversee and grade your independent study. You could choose to research a personal interest topic or a subject within your major.

In addition to class time, the Drexel in Dublin program includes two mandatory weekend excursions as part of the learning experience:

Field Trip 1: Visit Stormont Buildings in Belfast, the home of the former Northern Ireland Government. Stormont Buildings is now the seat of the newly created Legislative Assembly.

Field Trip 2: West Cork Literary Festival - Students will visit Bantry, Co. Cork where they will experience literary workshops and readings and be able to integrate the trip into their academic curriculum.

Grading
Students will receive a minimum of 12 Drexel credits and Drexel grades for this program. In addition to courses taken in Dublin, all students are required to undertake an independent study (minimum 3 credits) over the summer term with a Drexel faculty member. See Independent Study Proposal Agreement for details. Classes in Dublin are taught by Irish faculty and are held at the Dublin Business School.
