The Program

hist research tripThe Department of History & Politics in support of the History Senior Thesis program offers a travel research component to enhance the students' experience. The Senior Thesis program currently requires students to complete HIST 296 "Research Methods" and HIST 301 "Historiography" before enrolling in HIST 490-491, a two quarter thesis seminar. During the first half of1ne seminar we take students to visit the Library of Congress, Washington DC, where they will use the collections to explore and develop their thesis topic.

The Academics

While in London the group will visit three research institutions: Wellcome Library and Trust, British Museum, British Library.  The Wellcome Library contains an extensive collection of resources pertaining to the history and sociology of medicine reaching back to the earliest eras of human history. At the British Museum, students will view a selction of the collections, for example Ancient Europe and Asia, then proceed counter-clockwise to the Middle Ages and Early-Modern periods. At the British Library students will spend the day studing at the reading rooms, and exploring the public exhibits. During the inaugural trip in 2012, these included ones on the Magna Carta, and early Bibles on display (Gutenberg's and an 11th century scribal version). Students noted the similarities to the Library of Congress, especially regarding its security, reading rooms, and decorum. In their free afternoon, students can take advantage of the rich cultural and historical sites easily accessible in the London area.

Credit/Grades: All participants will be registered for HIST 298, 1 credit  which corresponds to the research and assignments related to this study tour.
