Drexel in Australia: University of Sydney

U. Sydney Campus Photo

Program Overview

The University of Sydney is a research university located in Sydney, Australia. It is Australia’s first university, and regarded as one of the most prestigious, ranked as part of the world’s top 40 universities in the QS World University Rankings. Called "Sydney Uni" by the locals, the university came into being in 1850. It is a large school, with over 32,000 undergraduate students.

The Sydney Exchange program completely immerses Drexel students into Australian education and culture as they take classes with the local Aussies and international students.

Sydney is the largest city in Australia and over 4 million people live within the city boundaries. Located on the east coast of Australia, it is the capital of New South Wales and is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. According to the QS Best Student Cities Rankings, Sydney is #1 in Australia, and #4 worldwide.

Most classes take place on the Campertown/Darlington campus, which is only 3km (about 1.5 miles) away from the city centre. This campus is the heart of the university, with big stone buildings and a large grass oval in the middle of campus.

Please note: The Exchange program with the University of Sydney is limited in spots, and is very popular.  Students applying to this program are strongly encouraged to select an alternate program.

Eligibility

  • 3.0 minimum GPA
  • This program is open to all Drexel majors and students may choose from a wide range of subjects.

Academics

Course Availability
List of classes: Use this to search coursework offered at the University of Sydney. Please note that classes are often called  "units" in Australia. The word "course" in Australia means "major."

Course Equivalencies
Course Equivalents: This spreadsheet is a historical list of pre-approved courses Drexel students have taken at University of Sydney before. Students can choose to take courses from this list, but there is no guarantee that these courses will be offered in the future.

Course Approvals
Students will need to get courses approved by the appropriate department for each course they plan to take at Sydney. For example, if you want to take a sociology course at Sydney for Drexel credit, its equivalent must be pre-approved by the Sociology Department at Drexel.

Grading
Students are taught and graded by Australian faculty at the University of Sydney. Grades are noted as "CR/NCR" on their transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. In order to receive CR, students must earn a "C" or above at the host institution. Students must be a full-time student at the host institution while also taking the equivalent of a full-time load at Drexel. Note: 4 classes is the maximum amount of courses a student can take on this program.

Program Calendar

The University of Sydney operates on a semester system. Click here for the academic calendar.

Fall Semester Dates and Itinerary: (Australia’s spring term, also called “Semester 2”)
Program Start Date Late July
Program End Date Late November
Students will need to leave their spring/summer co-op 6-8 weeks early in order to arrive in Sydney in time for University of Sydney’s Semester 2.

Spring Semester Dates and Itinerary: (Australia’s fall semester, also known as “Semester 1”)
Program Start Date Late February
Program End Date Late June
Students will need to leave their fall/winter co-op about 3 weeks to 1 month early to arrive in Sydney in time for orientation. Students might also need to arrange for early finals, or to take finals proctored at Drexel in June if Sydney finals coincide with the beginning of Drexel’s summer term.

Drexel students will need to work closely with the Study Abroad office, their academic advisor and the co-op office to determine how best plan their study abroad experience.  The study abroad office urges you to begin planning 12-18 months in advance.

Housing

University of Sydney on-campus options are available to student abroad students on a first come, first serve basis. It's important that students who want to live on campus apply as soon as housing applications open. For more information about the Sydney exchange program download the University of Sydney brochure and visit the Sydney Exchange Student website.

Visa

U.S. Students will have to apply for a visa Subclass 500 to go to Australia. Students cannot apply for a visa until they have been formally accepted by University of Sydney.

Cost and Financial Aid

Estimated Program Costs

Review the Estimated Study Abroad Costs page for a list of approximated program expenses.

Tuition & Financial Aid

This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus your Drexel tuition and financial aid remain the same during the term abroad. Students may also want to submit a revised budget to Drexel Central to see if additional funding may be available.

Students who receive Federal Work Study should consider applying for the Study Abroad Online Journalist work study position (only available to students after acceptance).

Scholarships
Those interested in seeking additional funding should review Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly.

For more information on these and many other scholarship opportunities, visit our Scholarships page.
