Drexel University, in partnership with Koç University, offers an exchange program available to students of ALL majors. Spend a term studying in Turkey taking courses in English. The Koç exchange program completely immerses Drexel students into Turkish education and culture as you take classes with the local Turkish and international students. For more information about Koç University check out the Incoming Students website. See the following link for a full listing of course offerings. Be sure to check the appropriate semester course offerings.
All classes at Koç are taught in English. There is no foreign language requirement. Koç has undergraduate programs in:
- Business Administration
- Computer Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- International Relations
Koc University - Course Equivalents.xls List of Koç courses that have been approved with Drexel equivalents. If you would like to take courses that are not listed, you will need to get equivalents approved by the appropriate department at Drexel. For example, if you want to take a sociology course for Drexel credit, the Sociology Department at Drexel must pre- approve the course and equivalency.

Grading: Students are taught and graded by Turkish faculty at Koç University. Grades are noted as "CR/NCR" on their transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. In order to receive CR students must earn a "C" or above at the host institution. The goal is to be a full-time student at the host institution while also taking the equivalent of a full-time load at Drexel.
Fall and Spring Program Calendar:
Koç is a semester based school. Students should prepare to make adjustments and be flexible in fitting this program into their Drexel schedule. Due to the need for cycle and program changes the study abroad office urges you to begin planning 12-18 months in advance
* Fall semester: September - early January.
* Spring semester: early February - May.
Students with fall/winter class have two options: 1) arrange with professors to take Koç final exams early (early exams are at the discretion of individual faculty members. Neither Drexel nor Koç can guarantee that all professors will allow this) OR 2) Students can change their co-op cycle to Winter/Spring. This would allow students to take Koç final exams in early January, and be on co-op for winter and spring terms. Keep in mind, this option would require an independent co-op search as well as a cycle adjustment.
Students with spring/summer class should consider going to Koç during the spring semester/term, leaving their winter co-op early. Students would then have a one month break before returning to Drexel in June for summer term classes. During this month students could return to their co-op, travel in Turkey or elsewhere, or return to the United States. Alternately, students may choose to attend Koc's "summer semester" program. Further details about the summer program are below.
Exciting events start as soon as you arrive at Koç. During your orientation you will receive your Smart Card for access into places such as the library, and also course materials from your advisor. The following day, you will get a free tour of Istanbul visiting sites such as the Haghia Sophia, and the Basilica Cistern! Koç has a variety of extra curricular activities and clubs to make your stay in Turkey a great one.
On-campus housing is available in single, double, triple and quadruple rooms. Internet, cable-TV and phone-services are available in each room. There are twelve laundry rooms and five kitchens in seventeen dorm buildings. At the ground floor of each building, there are computer rooms accessible to all students. In each dorm building, 7 to 10 students live on the same floor. Rooms include: refrigerator, bed, closet, desk, chair, bed stand, light, pillow and blanket. Students must bring their own towel, pillow case and sheets.
Students are required to obtain a visa for entry into Turkey. This process may take 6-8 weeks so students should act early. Visa Instructions.pdf
Summer Semester Program
Koc University now offers Drexel Students the opportunity to participate on an exchange program during their summer semester. You must be scheduled for summer class in order to participate in this summer program.
2014 Program Dates: June 9 - August 8, 2014
While this opportunity to open to all majors and has no language pre-requisite, it is ideal for students studying Business, International Area Studies, or Sociology. Koc offers a diverse array of courses to choose from. Summer semester courses are taught on a 5 or 7 week intensive schedule. 5 week course will end on July 20, while 7 week courses will end on August 8.
Students will take 2 courses at Koc during their summer semester. CLICK HERE for course offerings.
On some occasions, students may be able to take a 3rd course at Koc. However, scheduling may be difficult, and thus enrollment in a 3rd course cannot be guaranteed.
In order to maintain a full time summer course load, students must take a minimum of 12 Drexel credits. Students will need to supplement Koc course offerings with Independent Study or Online Course(s) at Drexel to meet this requirement. Koc also offers an opportunity to conduct an Independent Study at Koc to earn 1-3 additional credits. Depending on the independent study, the study may last between 5-12 weeks.
Applicants will need to seek course approvals from the appropriate departments at Drexel to determine course equivalencies for Koc courses. For example, if you want to take a sociology course at Koc, the Sociology Department at Drexel must pre- approve the course and Drexel equivalency.
Summer students will live in on-campus dormitories, and will take classes alongside local and other international students. Students can learn more about Koc's International Student services and review the international student handbook HERE.
This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus all of your financial aid travels with you. If you are interested in seeking additional funding, you should considering applying for study abroad Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly.
