UAS7: Germany Muenster University of Applied Sciences
The UAS7 (7 German Universities of Applied Science) program is a 9 month study + co-op exchange open to all Drexel majors! Students choose to study at one of 7 German universities: Berlin, Bremen, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Muenster and Osnabrück. The UAS7 program completely immerses students into German education, culture and work environment. Drexel students study together with local German and international students. During their co-op, students will get firsthand experience working in international teams. This is a wonderful opportunity to perfect your German language skills, meet German locals and gain international work experience!
The UAS7 universities offer courses in a variety of majors. To find out more, please visit the university websites. Students can choose from a wide range of subjects and classes offered in German and in English. Nonetheless, students should prepare to take most, if not all, of their coursework in German. Also, students can continue to advance their German skills by taking additional language classes.
UAS7 program calendar:
* Late Aug/Sept: Orientation and intensive German language course
* Oct - Feb: Full time course load at the university (fall term classes)
* Feb - June: professional internship in a company or research institute (winter/spring co-op)
* Students return to Drexel campus in June for summer term.
Students should prepare to make adjustments and be flexible in fitting this program into their Drexel schedule. Due to the need for cycle adjustments, students should begin planning 12-18 months in advance.
Things to consider when choosing the location best suited for you: Course offerings of the university; potential internship opportunities in that location; past approvals on the course equivalency sheets. Keep in mind that the course equivalency list is always growing, as more students participate in the program.
Grading: Students are taught and graded by German faculty at their host university. Grades are noted as "CR/NCR" on their transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. In order to receive CR students must earn a "C" or above at the host institution. The goal is to be a full-time student at the host institution while also taking the equivalent of a full-time load at Drexel. A full course load at a German school is between 20-30 ECTS credits per semester.
The language requirement for this program is German 203. Students should consider taking more language courses during their freshman summer vacation term or on campus during their co-op terms in order to advance their language skills more quickly. For more information please contact Modern Languages Department at 215-895-5816.
Many of the UAS7 schools can arrange or offer help finding accommodations. Students are encouraged to live in the residence halls because in some cities, such as Berlin and Munich, finding off-campus housing can be difficult.
Applicants from the United States and Canada don't need a visa to enter Germany. However, all students staying in Germany longer than three months need to obtain a residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) from their local Immigration Office after their arrival. Students do not need a work permit since their internship is part of an international exchange program.
This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus all of your financial aid travels with you. If you are interested in seeking additional funding, you should considering applying for study abroad Scholarship & Funding Opportunities . Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly.
The SIP (Study and Internship Program) sponsored by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) is a 6-month scholarship that awards approximately 675 euros/month for living expenses, including a monthly contribution to cover health and accident insurance. In addition, students receive 850 euroa as a contribution to travel expenses. With all of these financial resources, money should not prevent you from taking advantage of this fantastic opportunity!
A selection committee composed of UAS7 academics and international education experts will select the SIP Scholarship grantees.
