The Program
Option available pending approval from the University Travel Risk Review Committee
Drexel's exchange program with METU allows  Drexel students to study at one of the top universities in Turkey becoming fully immersed in the education, culture and daily life of both Turkey and METU. This is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends and explore your academic interests from a different perspective.
Located in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, METU is the largest public university in Turkey with over 23,000 students including over 1,000 international students.
For more information on studying at Middle Eastern Technical University (METU) in Ankara, Turkey please visit

All classes at METU are taught in English and there is no foreign language requirement. Students may take a variety of courses in their field.

Program Calendar:
METU is a semester based school. Students should prepare to make adjustments and be flexible in fitting this program into their Drexel schedule. Due to the need for cycle adjustments, students should begin planning 12-18 months in advance.
* Fall semester: September - early January
* Spring semester: February - June.

Students with fall/winter class have two options: 1) arrange with professors to take METU final exams early (early exams are at the discretion of individual faculty members. Neither Drexel nor METU can guarantee that all professors will allow this) OR 2) Students can change their co-op cycle to Winter/Spring. This would allow students to take METU final exams in early January, and be on co-op for winter and spring terms. Keep in mind, this option would require an independent co-op search as well as a cycle adjustment.

Students with spring/summer class should consider going to METU during the spring semester/term, leaving their winter co op early. Students will need to make arrangements to take their METU exams early if the METU spring semester ends after Drexel's summer term begins.
You will need to get equivalents approved by the appropriate department for the courses you plan to take at METU. For example, if you want to take a sociology course for Drexel credit, the Sociology Department at Drexel must pre- approve the course and equivalency.

Grading: Students are taught and graded by Turkish faculty at METU. Grades are noted as "CR/NCR" on their transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. In order to receive CR students must earn a "C"or above at the host institution. The goal is to be a full-time student at the host institution while also taking the equivalent of a full-time load at Drexel.

The Experience
Ankara, is where the eastern and western worlds converge. It is a huge university town and the local streets and venues are filled with students from around the world during most of the year. Capital city status and the presence of language schools and universities has brought a large ex pat community to Ankara and all this adds to the western feel of the city.

The Study Abroad Office at METU co-ordinates the Welcome and Orientation Program for incoming exchange students. The Orientation program starts two weeks prior to the beginning of semester. The orientation program consists of Beginning Turkish, and Contemporary Turkey, which will be partially completed before the semester begins. During the orientation program, the office also arranges tours of Ankara and study trips to nearby historical sites. To get a broader perspective of the culture, they are also taken to the villages and small towns to see the contrast in life.

There are 18 modern dormitories within the University Campus. METU will coordinate your housing.
A student visa is required for entrance into Turkey. This process may take 6-8 weeks so students should act early. Visa Instructions.pdf

Tuition & Financial Aid
This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus your Drexel tuition and financial aid remain the same during the term abroad. Students may also want to submit a revised budget to Drexel Central to see if additional funding may be available.

Students who receive Federal Work Study should consider applying for the Study Abroad Online Journalist work study position (only available to students after acceptance).

Those interested in seeking additional funding should review Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly.
For more information on these and many other scholarship opportunities, visit our Scholarships page.

Safety and Security
Turkey currently has a State Department Travel Warning.

All students who wish to participate in the program are required to read the United States Department of State Travel Warning and will propose their travel to the University TRR for review. Students should discuss the review process with their study abroad advisor. In addition, all students are strongly advised to purchase travel insurance when purchasing plane tickets should the United States Department of State Travel Warning change in such a way that would require Drexel University to cancel the program.
