The IAS Abroad program in conjunction with CIEE is a great opportunity for International Area Studies majors and minors, as well as language minors, to spend a term in France, Jordan, Russia, Japan or China. This program is attended by students from around the US, providing participants a chance to meet and study with students from various backgrounds. Students take academic courses at a local university, and are directly exposed to the culture and environment of their host country. This is also a great way to perfect your language skills. The CIEE program course offerings include an intensive language course as well as a variety of other courses including: Civilization, History, Literature, Political Science, International Business, Art History and Anthropology. Students attend courses at a local university. Class generally involves meeting once a week with fellow students and a course tutor. Grades are based on essays, exams and sometimes oral presentations Students earn Drexel grades and credit and for the courses taken through the CIEE Program.
Program Calendar: Please note that only CIEE fall term options are Drexel sponsored.
- * Start: Early September *
*Students should be prepared to leave summer term class/co-op several weeks early.
Program dates may vary by location. Be sure to confirm on the CIEE website for specific dates. Students should prepare to make adjustments and be flexible in fitting this program into their Drexel schedule. Due to the need for cycle adjustments, students should begin planning 12-18 months in advance.
To advance their language skills more quickly before studying abroad, students should consider taking more language courses during their freshman summer vacation term or on campus during their co-op terms. For more information please contact Modern Languages Department at 215-895-5816.
Experiencing an entirely new culture is at the heart of the CIEE program. There is an orientation program upon arrival, and a CIEE Program Director will be on hand to help students settle in and get the maximum out of their stay. Depending on the location, students may either live in a student residence hall, an apartment or with a host family.
All students are required to obtain a student visa for Japan, China, Russia and Jordan.
This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus all of your financial aid travels with you. If you are interested in seeking additional funding, you should considering applying for study abroad Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly.
