Drexel in England: Aston University

Birmingham Scenery Picture

Program Overview

The Drexel in England exchange with Aston University offers Drexel students an opportunity to spend a term studying at one of the most prestigious business universities in Europe. The Aston University Exchange completely immerses Drexel students into British education and culture by taking classes with the local British and international students. Situated in the heart of Birmingham, England's second largest city, Aston Business School, part of Aston University, attracts leading academics and key thinkers from all over the world to create a forward-thinking environment. For more information visit

With around 9,000 students, Aston University is a lively, diverse, close-knit community with great academic support and social facilities. Its campus in the center of Birmingham gives students the best of both worlds, a green, well-equipped, friendly campus in the heart of a vibrant city. There is plenty of nightlife both on campus and 5 minutes walk in the center of Birmingham. For more about life in Birmingham visit:

Before the start of classes at Aston, all exchange students attend a special two week program of activities and events to help get settled into life at Aston. The first, "Aston Welcomes Internationals", focuses on students from outside the UK. The second week offers a program of events from both the Business School and the Students Guild.

The Students Union is the main entertainment venue on campus and is home to a range of facilities and support services. There is also a huge array of clubs and organizations to join, giving students plenty of opportunity to try something different and meet new people. For more info about the Students Union visit:

Aston also has excellent sports and recreation facilities for both indoor and outdoor sports. There are a wide range of sports clubs and societies which are open to all students. For a full list of clubs, please visit:

Additional funding for approximately $3000 will be available for academic year 2019-2020 only. More information coming soon!

  • This program is open to students in all majors.
  • 3.0 GPA required

Course Availability
Drexel students must select from this list of Early Leaver classes. Most exams for the fall term take place in January, with the exception of the courses on this list.

Students are taught and graded by Aston faculty. In order to receive credit (CR) students must earn a "C" or above at the host institution. Grades are then indicated as "CR/NCR" on their Drexel transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. The goal is to take an appropriate number of courses to be a full time student at both ABS (30 ECTS credits) and Drexel (12 – 20 credits).

Program Calendar

As Aston is a semester university, this exchange works best for students scheduled for class during fall term.

Cost and Financial Aid

Estimated Program Costs

Review the Estimated Study Abroad Costs page for a list of approximated program expenses.

Tuition & Financial Aid

This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus your Drexel tuition and financial aid remain the same during the term abroad. Students may also want to submit a revised budget to Drexel Central to see if additional funding may be available.

Students who receive Federal Work Study should consider applying for the Study Abroad Online Journalist work study position (only available to students after acceptance).

Those interested in seeking additional funding should review Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly.

For more information on these and many other scholarship opportunities, visit our Scholarships page.

Erasmus+ Grant: Additional funding for approximately $3000 will be available for Winter 2020 ONLY.
This grant is a gift from the Erasmus+ organization to encourage mobility from Drexel students to attend Aston University. The grant is only for Winter 2020 and cannot be used another time.

The amount given is around $3,000 - this could change depending on the exchange rate, as the grant is given in Euros. It will also change depending on how many weeks the student is at Aston (arrival and departure dates). The purpose of this funding is to assist with living and travel costs.

Deadline to apply for the grant is same as the Aston University deadline - August 1, 2019.
