Drexel University, in partnership with Bogazici University, offers an exchange program available to undergraduate BS and BS/MS Biomedical Engineering majors. Bogazici University, located in Istanbul, is one of the most renowned applied science, engineering, and research universities in Turkey. The Bogazici exchange program completely immerses Drexel students into Turkish culture and education as you take classes alongside local Turkish and international students taught by distinguished Bogazici faculty. All courses at Bogazici are taught in English. Bogazici University is comprised of 5 campuses in Istanbul and over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Upon arrival at Bogazici, students will participate in an orientation program where you will find out about the city, university life, and have the opportunity to meet other students. The Office of International Relations acts as a support system for exchange students and can provide information to you regarding campus life and academics.

Bogazici University also has a wide array of activities and student clubs including the Chess Club, the Engineering Society, and the Mountaineering Club. Exchange students are encouraged to participate in these activities while attending Bogazici. Learn more about student activities on campus.


Eligibility

  • 3.0 minimum GPA
  • Prior study of Turkish language
  • Sophomore status or higher

Academics

Biomedical Engineering majors seeking either a BS or BS/MS degree at Drexel may study at Bogazici during the fall or spring of their Junior year.

Course Availability
Bogazici Pre-approved Course Equivalents: Students may select courses from this pre-approved list and may also choose from Bogazici's complete course catalog.  Be sure to note if courses are offered first semester (fall) or second semester (spring). Students must have all courses that do not appear on the pre-approved list approved for Drexel course equivalency prior to acceptance.

Grading
Students and taught and graded by Turkish faculty at Bogazici University. Grades are noted as “CR/NCR” on their Drexel transcript and will not affect their GPA. In order to receive CR students must earn a “C” or above at the host institution. You must plan to be a full time student at Bogazici while also being careful to take the equivalent of a full time load at Drexel.

Program Calendar

Bogazici is a semester school. While students may choose to study during either fall or spring term, please note that due to the semester calendar, the program dates will require you to leave your co-op early. Please review the Bogazici academic calendar.

Students will need to arrange to take exams early, as exams are regularly offered at the beginning of January. Please note that students attending Bogazici in the fall may need to arrange to leave their spring/summer co-op early.

Housing

Students will live in a modern dormitory called the Superdorm located on the university’s Ucaksavar Campus. The Superdorm can accommodate up to 486 students in its 130 fully furnished apartment-style dorms.

Visa

Students are required to obtain a visa for entry into Turkey. This process may take 6-8 weeks, so students should plan ahead. Students must complete an application form and submit it to the Consulate General of Turkey in New York at least 6 weeks before departure. An official acceptance letter from the university in Turkey and a consular fee of $100 US must be included. Please note that within 1 month of arriving in Turkey students must apply for a residency permit at a local law enforcement agency (Emniyet Mudurlugu). Please refer to our visa page.

Tuition & Financial Aid
This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus your Drexel tuition and financial aid remain the same during the term abroad. Students may also want to submit a revised budget to Drexel Central to see if additional funding may be available.

Students who receive Federal Work Study should consider applying for the Study Abroad Online Journalist work study position (only available to students after acceptance).

Scholarships
Those interested in seeking additional funding should review Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly.

    PENDING DREXEL UNIVERSITY TRAVEL WARNING REVIEW COMMITTEE APPROVAL
    Turkey currently has a State Department Travel Warning.

    All students who wish to participate in the program are required to read the United States Department of State Travel Warning and will propose their travel to the University TRR for review.Students should discuss the review process with their study abroad advisor. In addition, all students are strongly advised to purchase travel insurance when purchasing plane tickets should the United States Department of State Travel Warning change in such a way that would require Drexel University to cancel the program.
