The ProgramThis experience will provide students and faculty the opportunity to study aboard and deliver primary care services with a global health focus in conjunction with Explorers Sans Frontières (ESF), a Philadelphia based non-profit organization that has supported humanitarian projects both locally and abroad through sustainable programs in Senegal, Haiti, and Jamaica.
An interdisciplinary cohort of both Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant students, accompanied by their Track Director or designee, will travel to Haiti with ESF to engage in global health clinical experience. During this experience, students will be serving as healthcare providers for underserved communities in and around Port-au-Prince, including tent cities of displaced survivors of the 2010 earthquake.
The AcademicsDrexel students will receive 40 to 60 clinical practicum hours to be credited toward their clinical coursework (see below). Clinical supervision and Preceptorship will be provided by Drexel CNHP Faculty, an ESF Supervisor, and an ESF on-site Haitian Physician (as applicable).Clinical objectives include but are not limited to:
-Diagnosing and developing a treatment plan in a limited resource environment.
-Educate the Haitian community regarding chronic and acute health care issues.
-Become immersed within a unique culture.
-Provide direct public health services to a underserved community with extreme health disparities in populations across the lifespan.
-Gain practice experience, be challenged and gain a new perspective on the role of the advanced practice healthcare provider globally.
NP Related coursework:
-FNP IV/V - NURS 577 Geriatric Primary Care and/or NURS 579 Integrative Practicum in Family Practice;
-WHNP IV - NURS 693 Management and care of Obstetrical Needs of Women and Families II, PNP IV (N645)
PA Program: Clinical experience only
All students must complete the NP or PA pre-requisite coursework in order to participate in this program.

Program fee 2014: approx $2,500
Payment 1 due with application Sept 15th: $25 application fee + $600 advance payment of program fee

-Basic lunch (sandwiches) on clinic days
-Medication prescribed to local patients
-Professional Haitian translator for all clinical work
Additional Expenses (approx $350): OnCall emergency insurance, dinners, snacks/bottled water, transportation to/from US airport, US airport parking, spending money.
