Queen Mary University of London (QMUL)

QMUL campus

Program Overview

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is a large public research university in London, England. Located in the East End of London, QMUL is a member of the Russell Group of leading British research universities and ranked amongst the top universities in London.

London is the #1 destination of all study abroad locations, and QMUL is Drexel’s only exchange partner in London. While at QMUL, Drexel students are fully integrated into the university and study alongside British and other international students. With this program, Drexel students will have the experience of what it’s like to be a student in London.

The East End is one of London’s most dynamic areas, an area with a rich history that is one of the city’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan areas.  The East offers contrasts unlike any other area of London, from the bustle of street markets to peaceful walks along Regent’s Canal and through Victoria Park, traditional pubs, museums, start-ups and art galleries. Despite being one of London’s oldest areas it also contains the ultra-modern Docklands development which boasts some of Europe’s most exciting architecture.

Academics

Course Availability
Use the Directory of Modules to search coursework offered at QMUL. When you are searching for courses (=modules) use these filters:
Semester 1=fall semester, Semester 2=spring semester (winter quarter). Choose "Associates: YES". Level: choose between levels 3-6; you can only take a course at level 6 if you have already completed extensive coursework in that specific field of study.

PLEASE NOTEIf you are interested in the winter quarter option, you can only choose courses that under "Assessment" list "100% coursework"

Course Equivalencies
Students will need to get courses approved by the appropriate department for each course they plan to take at QMUL. For example, to take a sociology course at QMUL for Drexel credit, its equivalent must be pre-approved by the Sociology Department at Drexel.

Grading
Students are taught and graded by UK faculty at QMUL. Grades are noted as "CR/NCR" on their transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. In order to receive CR, students must earn a "C" or above at the host institution. Students must be a full-time student at the host institution while also taking the equivalent of a full-time load at Drexel.
Program Calendar
QMUL is an option for students during fall and/or winter terms. Click here for the QMUL academic calendar.

Fall Term
Start Date Mid September
End Date Mid December

Winter Term
Start Date Early Jan
End Date Late March
For Winter Term, students can only select courses in the Directory of Modules that list "100% coursework" under Assessment, as many courses have final exams that are administered in May/June. For this reason, winter term is not an option for any stem students. See "Academics" above.

PLEASE NOTE: WINTER TERM 2019 IS CLOSED

Housing

QMUL housing

QMUL offers accommodation for students, provided they apply by the deadline. All accommodation on campus is in modern, self-catered apartments. All rooms are single and the majority have en suite (private) bathroom facilities.  Typically rooms are grouped in flats for between four and eleven students, with shared kitchen facilities.

PLEASE NOTE: Students wishing to live in QMUL housing during winter term (=spring semester), will be required to sign a 6-month lease.

Visa

U.S. Citizens do not need to apply for a visa to go to the United Kingdom. Non-U.S. citizens can verify if a visa is needed on the British Consulate Visa page. Students should not fly through Ireland to get to London, or there can be major visa issues.? If students plan to study and/or Co-op in the UK for more than one term, they need to apply for the Tier 4 visa prior to departure.

Cost and Financial Aid

Estimated Program Costs

Review the Estimated Study Abroad Costs page for a list of approximated program expenses.

Tuition & Financial Aid

This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus your Drexel tuition and financial aid remain the same during the term abroad. Students may also want to submit a revised budget to Drexel Central to see if additional funding may be available.

Students who receive Federal Work Study should consider applying for the Study Abroad Online Journalist work study position (only available to students after acceptance).

Scholarships
Those interested in seeking additional funding should review Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly.

For more information on these and many other scholarship opportunities, visit our Scholarships page.

The Butex Scholarship awards £500 travel scholarships for students enrolling on study abroad or academic exchange programs. Queen Mary University of London is affiliated to Butex.

Students who receive Federal Pell Grant should apply for the Gilman Scholarship. Awards up to $3,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students that receive the Federal Pell Grant.
