Fall Intensive in India:
Community Based Healthcare

India Community Healthcare

Program Overview

This Intensive Course Abroad offers students enrolled in NURS 460: Population Health the option of completing some of their course work in the context of community-based healthcare in rural northern India. This course which involves hands-on, community-based experiences requires students to identify a healthcare need specific to the villagers of this region, research potential solutions using current evidence-based global health science and, working collaboratively with graduate nursing students at Eternal University, [Himachal Pradesh, India], propose community-based interventions. Each student group will create a presentation identifying their selected health need, research process and an evidence-based proposed intervention. Students will also have the opportunity to attend sessions of both the  Simulation Conference and Research Conference hosted at Eternal University. To conclude the experience in India, students will visit several significant cultural and historical sites.

By participating in this program student will be able to:

  • Describe evidence-based strategies to improve the health disparities (inclusive of behavioral health/substance use disorders) within a rural population in India.
  • Explain the differences between inequalities and inequities of social justice.
  • Apply the principles of social justice to this community.
  • Discuss the ethical implications of unequal access to resources within India.
  • Use current evidence to apply the five concepts of the Social Determinants of Health (HealthyPeople 2020) to promote public health within a community.
