Fall Break in France:
European Sport Management

Program Overview

As the sport, leisure, and recreation industries continue to expand globally, it is imperative that future sport managers to understand the fundamental differences and opportunities within the European sport management sectors. This program will provide students with the baseline knowledge necessary for a career in European sport management. Students will learn about contemporary issues in European sport management, matters related to governance, and management essentials of European/international sport. The course culminates in an Intensive Course Abroad hosted by the Centre for Law and Economics of Sport (CDES) at the University of Limoges, in France. In France, students will gain a theoretical and practical understanding of concepts learned throughout the course using a comparative approach delivered by CDES faculty. The class will include pre and post-travel elements, and will combine on-site coursework with cultural events and international experiences. Students will travel to Paris to meet with French sport management officials and local experts as part of supplementing and supporting concepts learned throughout the course.

  • Analyze strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats related to European sport management,
  • Explore professional opportunities related to European sport management,
  • Experience cultural and historical aspects of France and analyze its relevance to the course, and
  • Reflect on their experiences with the class.

Academics

Credit/Registration: Students will be registered for SMT T380 European Sport Management 4 credits as part of their summer term course load. Students must leave room for the credits in their summer credit load when registering for fall term or will be billed for credits exceeding the 20 credit maximum.

Summer Term Class: This course is taught in an online hybrid format with 4 in person classes and weekly modules on BBLearn. Participation and attendance is required. The course culminates with the study abroad program in France at the end of summer term.

Tentative Itinerary Overview

Day 1
: Arrival in Paris; Train to Limoges; Group Orientation

Day 2: Welcome with CDES faculty and graduate students; Drexel student presentations; CDES student presentations; Group Welcome Dinner

Day 3: CDES Faculty lectures on sport law and economics; Group debrief over lunch; Visit to Porcelain Museum

Day 5: CDES Faculty lectures on sport sociological factors; Group debrief over lunch; Visit World War II Resistance Museum

Day 6: Train to Paris; Guest expert lectures on sport management and marketing; Attend sporting event

Day 7: Cultural and sport activities in Paris; Group debrief and Farewell Dinner

Day 8: Hotel check out; Breakfast; Departure for US
