Fall Break in Australia:
Architecture & Interiors Intensive

ICA_Australia Opera House

Program Overview

Once a somewhat sleepy backwater of the Western world, Australia has emerged as a progressive and dynamic country with cities and new architecture to rival any found in North America or Europe. This Intensive Course Abroad will cover three extraordinary cities: Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. Students will visit historic sites that speak to Australiaʼs founding and the form of its cities and landscape, as well as modern architecture by celebrated Australian and international architects, including Philip Cox, John Wardle, Guida Moseley Brown, Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel, Romaldo Giurgola, and Jorn Utzon. During the journey, students will have the opportunity to visit firms, hear from notable practitioners, and visit with university design students and faculty.

Credit/Registration: Students will be registered for ARCH 347 or INTR T580 Australia Intensive for 3 credits during summer term. The course satisfies the History/Theory in the architectural curriculum and humanities for other majors. Students must leave room for the 3 credits in their summer credit load as the credits are not optional.

Pre-requisites: ARCH 141-143, OR ARTH 101-103, OR INT 200

Summer Term Class Sessions: Attendance is mandatory during summer term lectures in Philadelphia (schedule TBD).

Instructors: Alan Greenberger, Department Chair of Architecture, Design & Urbanism
