Crete! 07/01/2009 at 12:07 PM EDT

So flying to Greece is best down without three layovers. That is the best thing I can say about getting to Crete. After nearly 13 hours of flying, and layovers, we landed at the Crete Airport exhausted, and ready to get some rest. The best thing about flying to Greece is definitely the view down below. The landscape of Greece, and much of this part of the Mediterranean, is very unique and the water is so blue. Looking out it’s easy to start imagining what the sand under your toes and the sun on your face will feel like.

Needless to say, it’s now my fourth day in Greece and I’m still very jet lagged. Sleeping on the plane, for the most part, was next to impossible so after landing, I felt a little like a zombie. The trick is to stay busy and to stay in the sun. It helps you to regulate your biological clock, and with staying at a five star resort I plan on doing just that. The Hotel is beautiful, it sits on a quite beach and for the most part it’s been very relaxing. The rooms are pretty nice too, as are the meals. The view from the room overlooks the nearest town and some mountains. I’m fighting back a real urge to go climb them.

Today was also the first day of classes, which I think I’m going to enjoy quite a bit.
We started learning the Greek Alphabet and their pronunciations and although a little hard to catch on to, it’s not quite as hard as I thought it would be. I’m looking forward to at least being able to read the signs and understand basic sentences better. After that we talked about some of the Geopolitical and Historical aspects of Greece and why Greece is such a central location in the Mediterranean.
Classes went fast and they have a great laid-back atmosphere.

After class we finally got to see a little of the town. It’s very much a tourist area, with lots of souvenir and rental shops, but there was also distinctly Greek things going on. Between two Rental shops we walked right past an Archaeological dig! It was so cool to see! I was half tempted to jump in and start helping out.

So far, as it’s only day four, but Crete has been beautiful and enchanting. I can’t wait to see more of it!
